It’s the age old debate with many unqualified persons who claim to know best giving their opinions out as FACT and wading through these social media self proclaimed K9 nutritional experts can be difficult !!

Well there is no right and wrong, it's just a case of trial and error and finding out what works best for your individual dog and within your budget from the many options out there.

We certainly don't claim to be k9 nutritional experts but what we can share is our experiences and what has worked for us and our staffordshire bull terriers.

Our go to raw, 454g easy to use tubes from Big Bully Pet Supplies

Over many years we have read up, taken advice and tried many a diet, each have their own pros and cons. Currently and for the past few years we feed a predominately raw diet. Most of our raw food comes already balanced in the form or frozen 454g (1 lb) tubes 80% Meat / 10% offal / 10% bone and we vary the meat source -

Beef & tripe

Rabbit

Beef

Mixed Game

Lamb Tripe

We alternate between the 5 meals, no need to over complicate the diet. The addition of fish oil in the diet is great for the skin and coat.

We also use supplements which are easy to add to the food like Vit-gains, probiotic and liquid lamb fat which really help over time in general health, Joints and certainly coat.

Daily feeding guide for adult SBTs rule of thumb for raw is 2.5 -4 % of optimum body weight. Obviously this is something constantly reviewed in relation to activitity / exercise and adjusted accordingly. We would only ever feed to top end of 4% occasionally on a really heavy exercise day and we tend to aim for the 3% as a general rule.

        AMOUNT OF FOOD

Weight of SBT 2.5% 3% 4%

15kg                   375g - 450g - 600g

18kg                   450g - 540g - 720g

20kg                  500g - 600g - 800g

Every now and again as we live close to lots of farms we get the chance of fresh rabbits or other great quality great meats like venison which the SBTs always love!! Great offal also like hearts and livers from our local butcher.

In the past we have also fed a raw x dry (grain free hypoallergenic) and this has also worked well. If you ever do decide to do this make sure you choose a grain free hypoallergenic dry as you can mix this with raw. A grain / cereal based dry is more difficult to digest in combination with raw food so certainly avoid that.

Grain fee hypoallergenic dry from Big Bully Pet Supplies

This Raw x Dry (grain free hypoallergenic) diet will probably work out cheaper than a 100% raw diet. A possible down side to consider is the dry element will produce a larger waste output, in simple terms more poos to pick up !!

Raw, grain free dry and a raw egg.

It's also handy to have some grain free hypoallergenic dry in stock so if you are running low on raw and need to bulk it out a little or you forget to get the raw out the freezer the night before which I have been guilty of many times !!!

But why now do we feed 100% raw diet - As well as the good results in terms of long term health of a dog fed 100% on raw, compared to a diet which has dry of any description and also tinned wet food is the output produced by the dog in terms of waste ( poo ) is massively reduced. A raw only diet probably produces 20-30% of the total waste (poo) that a dog fed on other diets will produce.... Which is quite a perk especially when you have multiple dogs!!

100% raw Beef Tripe 80/10/10

There is no getting away from it, to feed raw can be an expensive compared to other  options out there but from our experiences the health benefits and general condition of a dog makes with a price worth paying.

So in our opinion Raw is best
